Bis Ende des Jahres war Anon auf ein Trio geschrumpft. Phillips und Rutherford arbeiten zur Jahreswende an neuem Material. Es entstehen Try A Little Sadness, Listen On Five und That’s Me.
Anthony Phillips und Mike Rutherford tun sich an Ostern mit den Rest-Mitgliedern der Band The Garden Wall – Tony Banks und Peter Gabriel – zusammen, um gemeinsame Aufnahmen bei Brian Roberts zu machen. Das erste Demo des neuen Kollektivs enthält unter anderem die Songs Patricia, Don’t Want You Back, Try A Little Sadness, Listen On Five und That’s Me. Nachdem der Produzent Jonathan King auf die neue Truppe aufmerksam wird, folgen in professionelleren Studios weitere Aufnahme-Sessions im Sommer und Herbst. Schließlich wird im Dezember mit dem neuen Drummer Chris Stewart die erste Single unter dem Namen Genesis mit der B-Seite That’s Me aufgenommen.
Weitere Demos werden im März aufgenommen, gefolgt von einer zweiten Single im April mit One-Eyed Hound von Phillips/Rutherford als B-Seite. Im Sommer entstehen zahlreiche Demo-Aufnahmen, von denen einige dann für das geplante erste Album ausgewählt werden. Schließlich im September findet mit dem neuen Drummer John Silver die Album-Session zu From Genesis To Revelation statt, bei der auch Songs von Phillips wie In The Beginning, In Hiding (vormals Patricia), Window und Visions Of Angels verewigt werden. Im Anschluss an die Album-Aufnahmen gehen die Mitglieder zunächst wieder eigene Wege. Anthony Phillips schreibt in der Folgezeit Songs wie Let Us Now Make Love, Little Leaf und Creation, und mit Mike Rutherford zusammen Queen Bettine.
Im Frühjahr bis Sommer entstehen Phillips-Werke wie Collections, Stranger, Lucy: An Illusion und The Beggar And The Thief und es wird vermehrt mit Rutherford an Stücken gearbeitet, die auf zwei 12-saitigen Gitarren entstehen. Als im Sommer Genesis wieder zusammen kommt, haben die beiden schon einiges an Kompositionen vorzuweisen, darunter D Instrumental (später The Geese And The Ghost), Beside The Waters Edge, Deep In The Night und Silver Song – letzteres als Abschieds-Song für Drummer John Silver, der ab Herbst nicht mehr bei der Band sein würde. Im August geht die Band ins Studio, um vier Songs als Demo aufzunehmen, darunter die Phillips/Rutherford-lastigen Tracks Pacidy, Family (später Dusk) und White Mountain.
Da nicht alle Phillips/Rutherford-Stücke „band-tauglich“ erscheinen, nehmen die beiden an einem probefreien Wochenende im September einiges an gemeinsamem Material auf.

Zwei weitere Titel von Rutherford/Phillips, Morning Mist und Leamington Spa, standen ebenfalls auf der Liste möglicher Aufnahmen, aber Mike und Ant beschlossen, sie nicht aufzunehmen.
Im laufenden Jahr kommt es außerdem zu ersten gemeinsamen Sessions von Ant mit Gitarrist Harry Williamson, den er im vergangenen Winter durch den gemeinsamen Freund Richard Macphail kennengelernt hatte. Es entsteht unter anderem das Stück Alice: The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. Die Zusammenarbeit wird in Folgejahren stark an Bedeutung gewinnen.
Ab Oktober bereitet sich Genesis mit dem neuen Drummer John Mayhew auf erste Auftritte vor. In den ersten Setlists unter anderem dabei sind In The Beginning, Visions Of Angels, Little Leaf, Pacidy, Family, White Mountain und Let Us Now Make Love.
Zu Beginn des Jahres nimmt Genesis vier Tracks für ein angedachtes BBC-Projekt des Künstlers Michael Jackson auf, und Ende Februar eine BBC Nightride Session mit den Songs Pacidy, Let Us Now Make Love und Stagnation. Nach zahlreichen Gigs, welche Anthony Phillips immer weniger gut bekommen, wird Juni/Juli das zweite Album Trespass mit Songs wie Visions Of Angels, Dusk, White Mountain und Stagnation aufgenommen. Ant spielt seinen letzten Auftritt mit der Band am 18. Juli 1970. In den Tagen nach seinem Ausstieg schreibt er Songs wie Which Way The Wind Blows, God If I Saw Her Now und Teile von Henry: Portraits From Tudor Times und nimmt etliche seiner Werke zuhause mithilfe seiner Freunde Harry Williamson und David Rootes einem Bang & Olufsen Beocord 2000 Tape Recorder auf – einer gemeinsamen Anschaffung von Ant und Peter Gabriel einige Monate zuvor. Dokumentiert werden bei diesen Sessions auch erste Früchte der Kollaboration zwischen Harry und Ant.

Phillips beginnt ein Musik- & Kompositions-Studium und bekommt Klavierunterricht. Er schreibt ein langes Piano-Stück, aus dem sich Leaping Salmon entwickeln sollte. 1970 schreibt er außerdem den Song I Saw You Today.
Neben seinem Studium schreibt Ant mit Winter’s Thaw und The Old House weitere Piano-Werke. Und im Sommer entsteht gemeinsam mit Harry Williamson auf zwei Gitarren das, was später die ersten drei Teile der Gypsy Suite werden sollte. Diese und weitere Demos werden auf Band dokumentiert.

Im Spätsommer nutzt man den Vorschuss von Charisma Records, um sich ein ordentliches Mischpult und zwei TEAC 4-Spur-Bandmaschinen zu kaufen. Das Studio in Ants Elternhaus Send Barns wird somit startklar für die Aufnahmen des geplanten Album-Projekts von Ant und Mike gemacht. Ab Oktober beginnen die ersten Aufnahme-Sessions, für die auch neben Mike schon Ants Bruder Rob und Steve Hacketts Bruder John Hackett zum Einsatz kommen.

Während Mike Rutherford sich wieder auf Genesis konzentriert, die nach Peter Gabriels Ausstieg ein neues Kapitel beginnen, arbeitet Ant im Herbst wieder mit Harry Williamson zusammen, um den vierten und letzten Teil ihrer 1971 begonnenen Gypsy Suite zu schreiben.
In diesem Jahr entstand auch Ants Gitarren-Stück Nocturne.
Im Frühjahr 1976 hilft Anthony Phillips bei ersten, professionellen Solo-Aufnahmen seines Ex-Kollegen Peter Gabriel, bei denen auch Mike Rutherford, Phil Collins und Brand X-Gitarrist John Goodsall beteiligt sind

Ant legt nach diesen Sessions Simon Draper von Virgin Records die bislang abgeschlossenen Aufnahmen von The Geese & The Ghost und die frischen Demos der Gypsy Suite vor, um für die Veröffentlichung beider Projekte zu werben. Nur an Gypsy Suite besteht Interesse, mit dem Vorschlag, Ant und Harry eine Bandmaschine auszuleihen, um deren Wunsch nach Beteiligung weiterer Musiker entgegen zu kommen. In der Hoffnung auf einen finanziell besseren Deal, lehnt Ant das Angebot ab.
Im Anschluss werden zahlreiche Solo-Aufnahmen von Ant gemacht, darunter auch ältere Stücke. Dabei sind auch Aufnahmen für eine geplante, moderne Adaption von Shakespeares Macbeth, welche letzten Endes nicht zum Abschluss kommen wird.

Im Spätsommer erreicht Ant die Nachricht von Manager Tony Smith, dass er ein Label in Amerika für das Album begeistern konnte und zudem zum Zwecke der Veröffentlichung zuhause ein eigenes Label gründet. Somit beginnt Ant im Oktober mit den Aufnahmen der beiden restlichen Stücke, zunächst im Heim-Studio, und anschließend mit Gästen in den Olympic Studios.

Aus dieser Schaffensphase bis 1976 werden einige Songs in späteren Phasen nochmals neu oder auch erstmals aufgenommen. Aus der Zeit bei Genesis sind das die Stücke Let Us Now Make Love, Old Wives Tale (Little Leaf), Creation, Stranger, Lucy: An Illusion, Beside The Waters Edge, Deep In The Night und Silver Song, und aus der Zeit danach I Saw You Today, Winter’s Thaw, The Old House, Shoreline, Winter Lights, Cradle Song, Gygsy Suite, Tarka und Nocturne.
