Der achte Teil des Recording Compendiums beschäftigt sich mit der Zeit rund um Dance Into The Light und A Hot Night In Paris.

Nach der Far Side Of The World-Tour beginnt für Phil Collins ein neues privates und auch berufliches Kapitel. Er verlegt seinen Wohnsitz in die Schweiz, wo er mit seiner neuen Partnerin Orianne Cevey zusammen zieht, und er kündigt nun offiziell nach 25 Jahren seinen Posten bei Genesis. Und wie es der Zufall will, bekommt er ein Angebot, dass er nicht ablehnen kann: Disney möchte, dass Phil die Musik zum nächsten Animations-Film Tarzan schreibt, der in vier Jahren ins Kino kommen soll! In diesen Monaten kommt es zu zwei Kollaborationen: zum einen singt Phil eine Neu-Interpretation eines Duke Ellington-Klassikers von einem seiner großen, musikalischen Helden, Quincy Jones, ein, und zum anderen eine Neufassung eines Songs aus dem Musical-Klassikers West Side Story.

Nachdem nach den privaten Turbulenzen wieder mehr Ruhe einkehrt, beginnt er gegen Ende des Jahres sowohl an neuem Material für ein kommendes Solo-Album zu basteln, als auch erste Song-Ideen für den geplanten Tarzan-Film zu festzuhalten.

Im neuen Jahr kommt es zu einem musikalischen Wiedersehen mit seinem alten Freund John Martyn, für dessen neuem Album Phil etliche Songs am Schlagzeug begleitet.

Während seine beiden ex-Kollegen von Genesis mit neuem Sänger ein weiteres Kapitel ihrer Bandgeschichte beginnen, nutzt Phil seine neu gewonnene Freiheit unter anderem damit, sich langgehegte, musikalische Wünsche zu erfüllen. So nimmt er das Angebot vom Montreux Jazz Festival-Chef Claude Nobs, einen Termin beim diesjährigen Festival frei nutzen zu können, zum Anlass, das Projekt „The Phil Collins Big Band“ anzugehen. Er kann Quincy Jones als Big Band-Dirigent, Saxophon-Star David Sanborn und Tony Bennett als Gast-Vokalisten dafür gewinnen, und man stellt aus Mitgliedern der deutschen WDR Big Band, Collins‘ aktueller Live-Band und Phil selbst als Drummer eine neue Truppe zusammen, die Mitte Juli gemeinsam Konzerte spielen würden.

Bis es soweit ist, arbeitet Phil weiter an seinem nächsten Solo-Album und nimmt fleißig Demos auf. Von den knapp 20 Song-Ideen, die schon eindeutig für Collins‘ neue Einflüsse, wie afrikanischen Pop, aktuellen BritPop und Singer/Songwriter erkennen lassen, erreichen auch etliche früher oder später die Hörerschaft in Demo-Fassungen…

Doch bevor das Album aufgenommen wird, sind die Konzerte der Phil Collins Big Band an der Reihe. Die Setlists bestehen zu einem Drittel sowohl aus Phils Solo-Nummern als auch zu einem weiteren Drittel aus Genesis-Songs, die allerdings allesamt drastisch in instrumentale Big Band-Fassungen umarrangiert wurden. Ein weiteres Drittel besteht aus allerlei Jazz-Standards, mit und ohne Gesang. Das Debüt-Konzert findet am 11. Juli in der Londoner Royal Albert Hall statt, und von den gespielten Songs gibt es einige professionelle und auch einige Publikums-Aufnahmen…

Unmittelbar nach dem Big Band-Abenteuer geht es für Phil an die Aufnahmen seines nächsten Solo-Albums, das nach ein paar schweren, privaten Jahren passenderweise Dance Into The Light heißen soll und erstmals in Frankreich stattfinden – genauer in einem kleinen, gemieteten Schloss nur 45 Auto-Minuten von seinem neuen Wohnsitz in Begnins in der Schweiz entfernt. Anders als bei seinem letzten Album, werden die 16 Songs wieder mit jeder Menge Gast-Musiker eingespielt, darunter überraschenderweise auch sein alter Freund Ronnie Caryl, die er gemeinsam mit seinem Lieblingsproduzent aus den 80ern, Hugh Padgham, produziert.

Den Rest des Jahres ist er mit allerhand Promo-Aktivitäten für Album und Singles, mit Vorbereitungen auf die geplante Tour im nächsten Jahr und sicher auch mit weiteren Tarzan-Demos beschäftigt.

Noch bevor die Tour beginnt (die Proben dafür laufen im Januar in Lausanne in der Schweiz und im Februar in Lakeland in Florida), kommt es Anfang Februar zu einer Promo-Live-Performance im französischen TV, wo er neben drei Solo-Nummern überraschenderweise auch zwei Cover-Songs im Duett einbaut: zum einen ein Klassiker von den Kinks zusammen mit Susanne Vega und ein früher Hit von Prince mit den Teenie-Lieblingen von East 17…

Schließlich startet der erste Teil der Trip Into The Light-Tour Ende Februar in Nordamerika, wo man bis Ende April Konzerte gibt. Überraschenderweise findet auch ein Song aus Phils Buster-Soundtrack von 1988 in die Setlist, von dem bislang keine von Phil gesungene Version veröffentlicht wurde…

Nach diesem Tour-Abschnitt gibt es erstmal eine ungewohnt üppige, 5-monatige Auftritts-Pause, in denen sicher auch das eine oder andere am Tarzan-Soundtrack gearbeitet wird. In Erscheinung tritt Phil dann erst wieder Mitte September bei einem von George Martin initiierten Benefiz-Konzert für die britische Karibik-Insel Montserrat, die durch einen Vulkanausbruch zwei Jahre zuvor stark in Mitleidenschaft gezogen wurde. Auch Martins Air Studios auf der Insel wurden zerstört. Phil ist zu diesem Anlass wieder Teil einer All-Star-Band…

Es ist zu vermuten, dass Phil Collins in der ersten Hälfte des neuen Jahres verstärkt an dem Soundtrack-Material für Tarzan arbeitet, der in einem Jahr in die Kinos kommen soll. Für dieses Jahr ist allerdings eine Collins-Compilation mit mit seinen größten Hits geplant. Ein neuer Song soll aber als Single auf die Zusammenstellung, die den schlichten Titel …Hits bekommt, aufmerksam machen. Dazu schnappt man sich den derzeit angesagten R&B-Künstler/-Producer Babyface, der für Phil einen älteren Cindy Lauper-Song produziert.

Einige Wochen nach Abschluss seiner Tournee mit der Phil Collins Big Band hält sich Phil Anfang Oktober für TV-Liveauftritte als Promo für seine …Hits-Compilation in New York auf. Am 1. Oktober spielte er mit der Big Band für Live By Request in den Sony Studios, tags darauf war er im Hard Rock Cafe für VH-l Hard Rock Live zuhören. Am dritten Tag spielte er auf Einladung von Cathy Rich ein Tribute-Konzert mit der Big-Band von deren Vater Buddy Rich. Mit dem gemeinsamen Auftritt mit der Band seines Vorbildes schließt sich für Phil sozusagen der Big Band-Kreis. Das Ereignis wird auch aufgezeichnet und veröffentlicht.
